Pet Owners Be Warned: More Poisonous Meatballs Found in San Francisco (Update)

Update 4 p.m.: It appears more suspicious meatballs have been found in another neighborhood across the city. According to police, four more meatballs were discovered on the sidewalk near 855 La Playa St. in the city's Richmond District last night. Police are still trying to confirm whether the meat snacks are in fact laced with poison.

Original Story 7:44 a.m.:Police are warning San Francisco dog owners to keep a watchful eye on their pooch after police found nearly two dozen poisonous meatballs over the weekend, the same kind that killed one dog last summer.

San Francisco Animal Control Officers spent about four hours Saturday morning scouring a Twin Peaks neighborhood looking for poisoned meatballs that they believe are intentionally left in areas dogs are known to frequent. The goal seems clear: to sicken or kill the pups.

During their weekend search, police found 21 poisonous meatballs that appear very similar to the strychnine-laced meatballs found last summer in the same location.

"The meatballs were well-hidden in bushes and shrubbery, and the highest concentration were found in the vicinity of Crestline Drive and Parkridge Drive," says Deb Campbell, spokeswoman for the ACC.

Unfortunately, police aren't 100 percent sure they have recovered all the laced meatballs, thus, ACC spent the rest of the weekend posting flyers in the neighborhood, warning pet owners to be on the lookout for the meaty treats.

As far as the ACC knows, no animals have been sickened by the meatballs.

Until they can get this meatball situation under control, police are asking pet owners to keep their cats indoors and walk their dogs on a short leash. Keep the pups away from bushes and shrubbery -- where the majority of meatballs have been found.

Last July, police discovered hundreds of laced meatballs in the Twin peaks and Diamond Heights neighborhoods. Those contained enough strychnine to potentially kill a human. Sadly, a dachshund named Oskar devoured a meatball and died.

If anyone has information that could help the investigation, they are encouraged to call the SFPD anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444.

If it is a guy, have to worry even more that it might advance giving the homeless poisoned food and so on and so forth farther from there.

"it IS a man. Women don't do this kind of thing" I don't know, I could easily picture an old lady, pissed off about dogs peeing on her lawn, doing this type of thing. Ladies be banging on the front windows my dog pees on the light pole in front of their house...let alone if he even gets close to the lawn (that we wouldn't even let him pee on anyways even if someone wasn't watching...and they do watch, sit in the window, and just watch...kinda creepy actually).

Stop meatball abuse.  In defense of meatballs, this story gives them a bad name.

When the police find out who's doing this they should feed the guy ( it IS a man. Women don't do this kind of thing ) his own poison meatballs and let him see how they taste.

check out who in the neighborhood has a history of calling the cops on dog owners, or perpetually complaining about dogs. good place to start.

So fucked up. Pierre wasn't feeling well this weekend and I was so paranoid that he ate the meatballs somewhere.

Time for a Committee of Vigilance to catch the creep and have a necktie party!

Mercedes Murray - as a dog owner, I can tell you that most dogs will eat meat on the ground before you realize it. They have a strong sense of smell and can therefore smell a meatball before we see it, especially if it is hidden in shrubbery.

They like doing that with people food, as well. Always keep charcoal capsules handy.

Sounds like some jackass doesn't like somebody's pooch peeing on their lawn.
