Update 2:55 p.m.: San Francisco police identified the driver in the fatal pedestrian collision early this morning as 27-year-old Mageb Hussain of Emeryville. Hussain was charged with felony hit and run and felony vehicular manslaughter.

Update 12:35 p.m.: Police say the male pedestrian had been walking outside the crosswalk when he was hit.

Original Story: An unidentified pedestrian was killed early this morning after a car traveling along Van Ness Avenue through the Pacific Heights neighborhood struck the victim.

Officer Gordon Shyy says the driver hit the pedestrian at about 1 a.m. as the victim was walking at Van Ness and Pacific avenues. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene briefly, but then witnesses saw him walk away, westbound on Pacific Avenue. As officers arrived, the same witnesses pointed out the driver who was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter and hit and run, Shyy says.

The driver has not yet been identified.

This is the city's third pedestrian death this year.

The sad reality of the situation is it's not 100% the drivers fault. I ride a bike, I walk, and I drive. When people walk here they: 1 don't pay attention 2 feel that they can just step off the curb anytime with out looking 3 texting or some other distraction 4 lolly gag across the street (not all cross at the same time) If you lived in another city and tried to "own" motorist they would chase you back up on the curb.

Lets outlaw pedestrians, even cops don't walk anymore, they ride.

Hey Stephanie - it's illegal for you to ride your bike in a crosswalk. It's for pedestrians, not bicyclists. Stop being an asshole.

people gotta not cross at crosswalk, wait for cars to pass, & RUN when clear! I almost got ran over at night even with reflective wear & flashlight, person stopped so I started walking than they started moving! I ran across somehow & still alive bearly.

Everyday, without fail when I cross an intersection, on a green light, there is always an inpatient or aggressive driver who never really stops. They actually slowly edge the car towards you as you cross. WTF? What is so important that they feel the need to run people down?

That someone would actually try to "walk away" from a situation like this. Give this person life in prison ! No parole, period !

Three deaths already, and it's only mid-February? Is that normal?

Seems like almost every day a pedestrian is hit by a car in SF. Are they an their cell phone or texting or what is the matter with y'all?

ive almost been hit by cars two days in a row now. we need mandatory jail sentences for drivers who hit pedestrians. if you're in control of a 2 ton death machine through heavily foot-trafficed streets, it is 100% your responsibility to make sure your weapon doesn't hit anyone.

Given driver/Pedestrian behavior, use of cell phones and traffic patterns, I'm surprised this doesn't happen even more. Isn't the BOS working on something?
