Another pedestrian hit in San Francisco
An unidentified man is clinging to life today after he was hit by a car while walking through the Civic Center neighborhood early this morning.

Sgt. Eric O'Neal says that the man, who was only described as being in his 50s, was walking westbound through the crosswalk at Van Ness Avenue and Grove Street at about 2:23 a.m. when he was hit by an SUV.

The driver fled the scene and has not yet been located, police say.

The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a life-threatening head injury.

It's the latest in a string of pedestrian injuries and fatalities across San Francisco. Yesterday, a 79-year-old man died after he was struck as he walked along Sunset Boulevard. The driver and two others in the vehicle were also injured.

The number of pedestrians hit in the last two months is evidence of an epidemic in San Francisco. Between Dec. 31 and Jan. 12, 167 pedestrians were struck by either cars or bikes. Community groups and city supervisors have called on the mayor to implement some rapid changes to bring the pedestrian fatality rate to zero in the next 10 years. That includes more police enforcement, safety improvements, and driver education for commercial drivers in San Francisco.

Blame tourists if you like- but you can't honestly deny that many SF residents are as entitled and self-righteous about driving as they are about everything else.

Locals don't have a problem driving. My guess is it's some idiot who just moved here.
