Lyft Driver Lashes Out at Cameraman (Video)

A shrine for Sophia Liu, who was killed by an Uber driver on New Year's Eve.
As the turf war between cabbies and car-hire startups escalates in Paris, it continues to stew in San Francisco, where taxi drivers have taken to their cell phones to document instances of Uber and Lyft drivers behaving badly.

One such video was rebroadcast on local news station NBC this morning, showing a nasty altercation between a driver who'd idled his pink-mustachioed vehicle in front of a fire hydrant at a crosswalk handicapped ramp, and a pedestrian who began filming this spectacularly illegal parking job.

In follow-up interviews, the pedestrian characterized himself as an out-of-work cab driver who cares strongly about the cause. The Lyft driver said he was on his "personal time" checking on his father's robbery-plagued liquor store. He felt "threatened" by the impromptu video.

That this footage came to light just two weeks after an Uber driver killed a 6-year-old girl doesn't exactly burnish the image of app-based transit. We're waiting on comment from Lyft.

Here's the video, courtesy of NBC:

Please don't fight guys...

As of the drivers, regardless whether they are from Uber, SideCar, Lyft, or taxi drivers, remember to treat your vehicles as possible moving weapon, so please slow down and drive carefully!

Watch out for those pedestrians who often just jump to the street expecting every drivers are watchful and skillful enough to stop in split second.

For those who have not experienced Lyft yet, why not give a try. Just download the app and here is $10 OFF promo code for the first ride. Just enter it in the "Payment" section.

Huh, really blown away by all the stereotyping of the taxi culture in the comments. I thought we were beyond all the generalizing and stereotyping. I suppose it's this ignorance that keeps Lyft thriving. The point to the article is that these services aren't all they are cracked up to be. They're less accountable legally as we have seen here with the sad death of a 6 year old girl, and many more assualts, verbal abusiveness, the creep factor, lack of city knowledge, deaths and accidents. It's only going to get worse. Let's see them intelligently as they are. Multilillion dollar corporations trying to monopolize the market and crush any hopes of local innovation.

Yeah, cab drivers, like, always obey traffic laws... And they're SO NICE! Remember that one time someone got hit by a car by a taxi? That one time, every day?

This is truly shocking... I've never EVER had a completely insane taxi driver. Like, ever.

Shouldn't matter if you're on the click or not. You're still representing Lyft while displaying a mustache. If drivers aren't working then take down the logo & there won't be any back lash- The public will think you're just another moron San Francisco driver.

Lame. Taxi drivers perform more traffic infractions in one fare than I do all year.

uhh yeah because taxi drivers are REALLY great drivers. they also never park illegally... ...taxis are less respectful of traffic laws than cyclists. the liability issue with uber and lyft is a fair point, but their attempt to discredit their drivers as being bad drivers is ridiculous.

Nice share and totally inappropriate behavior by the Lyft driver regardless of what led to the altercation. Still don't know exactly how the video was edited up until the altercation. If SF weekly and/or NBC Bay Area affiliate wants to do some real reporting instead of a cell phone camera footage of a taxi driver or an article that was written against rideshares by a taxi rep, please set up your cameras/reporters at Gough & Pine or Bush & Franklin and see how many taxis disregard all speed limits, safety etc. in regards to public safety. I do appreciate the new PR tactics of cab companies trying to reach out to media outlets though. I hope this kind of face time they're getting will stop them from cussing me out for no reason in traffic or flipping me off like a true gentleman as we sit next to each other at traffic lights and such.

So where is the video for sidecar? Or instantcab? I guess it'll be a matter of time.

Literally getting away with murder (well, manslaughter) in some cases -- until the laws catch up.

@maplecraig A quick Google search will reveal that maplecraig is nothing but a shill for taxi companies.  Seriously, Google search maplecraig + lyft or uber and you can see this loser comment on nothing but articles on ride share apps.  Pathetic that taxi companies have resorted to trolling news articles to hope to get people on their side.  The taxi company monopoly is crumbling and the people are the winners.

Are you high on some kind of drug?  Taxi's have $1,000,000 insurance policies.  Uber denies any responsibility for a dead 6 year old girl.  Wake up.

@dexter2323@maplecraigAsk the family of the 6 year old girl who was killed by an Uber driver with no insurance if the people are the winners.

@maplecraig  You are high.  If a cabbie does something illegal while off duty are cab companies held responsible?

Cab company monopolies are over.  Deal with it.  Your fault for providing sh*tty serivce over the years and not adapting to technology.  No one feels sorry for you losers.

Taxi Driving Murderer kills multiple people.  Taxi company spokesman says the following:

"These are not employees. These are independent contractors who lease."

Where was the million dollars to give to families of the victims in that case?

You've been exposed as a Taxi Company Shill.  Time to register for a new username, maplecraig, Dave Sutton, DaveBobSutton or whatever you want to call yourself.

@dexter2323@maplecraigThe Uber driver who killed the 6 year old girl was on his way to make an Uber pick-up.  A taxi driver is considered on duty when he is on his way to make a pick-up or even on his way to lunch once he starts his shift.  So yes, the $1,000,000 insurance policy would kick in and the taxi company would be held responsible.  So, who is the dummy as well as a complete moron?  You.  And what company are you accusing me of trying to give financial gain to?

dexter2323
dexter2323

@maplecraig Hey dummy, it was an off duty driver.  So if an off duty Taxi driver were to commit a crime, Taxi companies would "take responsibility" and pay up?  STFU you shill.  I have no ties to Lyft, uber or sidecar, can you say the same thing about taxi companies?  The fact that you continue to try to use the death of a 6 year old girl for your company's financial gain shows what kind of scum you are.

@dexter2323@maplecraigStrange that when one google's dexter2323 and Lyft, they come up with my name responding to your hateful comments.  Who is trolling who? You didn't answer the question.  How can you support for profit companies (Not ride share apps according to the CPUC's recent ruling) when their insurance won't cover the death of this little girl.  A taxi's $1,000,000 coverage would have kicked in automatically.  This poor family had to rely on donations to give her a funeral. Sounds like you are the shill.  I'm sure it's all in the operating budget of Lyft to have you post promotional comments. On the payroll?  You aren't fooling anybody.

dexter2323

@maplecraig What kind of despicable person would use the death of a 6 year old girl to try and drum up hate for ride share apps?  A taxi company shill like maplecraig, that's who.

@maplecraig  Dexter; a little lesson on insurance for the  uninformed (you) While cab drivers are in cab they are covered by company's blanket policy.  the taxi company holds the policy; not the driver!  Unless uber, yelp and other drivers have commercial insurance, they DO  NOT  have insurance while paying customers are in the car and (as the courts will determine) while having any interface with the franchisor (lyft, uber etc).  CAb companies are not monopolies.  they have LEGALLY operarted under utility commission rules and are profitable companies.  If people want to LEGALLY compete then go through the process.  And I continue to wonder, why does UBER, a united states corp, have its legal life in Belguim?????
