Larry Brinkin, S.F. Gay Rights Activist, Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges
Larry Brinkin, the former San Francisco Human Rights commissioner who shocked the gay community when he was busted with child pornography, pleaded guilty this morning as part of a deal cut with prosecutors.
The 67-year-old Brinkin reportedly agreed to six months in county jail and six months of home detention as well as four years probation. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the second charge of distributing child porn.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
According to KTVU, Brinkin is out of custody after posting $240,000 bail. He will be sentenced on March 5.
SF Weekly broke the news in June 2012 when local cops had arrested the high-profile gay rights activist after investigators traced images of children as young as perhaps a year old being sodomized by and performing oral sex on adult men to Brinkin's IP address. SFPD acted after receiving a tip from the Los Angeles Police Department, which obtained from AOL an e-mail exchange between a Los Angeles user and firstname.lastname@example.org.
Zack3737@aol.com -- whom the police say is Brinkin -- provided graphic commentary on the photos of interracial adult-child sex. Comments included "I loved especially the nigger 2 year old getting nailed. Hope you'll continue so I can see what the little blond bitch is going to get. White Power! White Supremacy! White Dick Rules!"
Police say they linked the AOL address to Brinkin's IP address; he is owner of the account and paid for AOL service with his credit card.
Brinkin, a beloved member of the gay community, led the fight for the city to recognize same-sex partnerships. He served on the Human Rights Commission until 2010 when he retired after 22 years of service. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that same year proclaiming the first week of February "Larry Brinkin Week."
Brinkin's defense attorney Randall Knox chalked the incident up to being a mistake and assured reporters that Brinkin is "genuinely remorseful" and "has a much greater understanding of the damage child pornography creates."
