Larry Brinkin, the former San Francisco Human Rights commissioner who shocked the gay community when he was busted with child pornography, pleaded guilty this morning as part of a deal cut with prosecutors.

The 67-year-old Brinkin reportedly agreed to six months in county jail and six months of home detention as well as four years probation. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the second charge of distributing child porn.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

According to KTVU, Brinkin is out of custody after posting $240,000 bail. He will be sentenced on March 5.

SF Weekly broke the news in June 2012 when local cops had arrested the high-profile gay rights activist after investigators traced images of children as young as perhaps a year old being sodomized by and performing oral sex on adult men to Brinkin's IP address. SFPD acted after receiving a tip from the Los Angeles Police Department, which obtained from AOL an e-mail exchange between a Los Angeles user and zack3737@aol.com.

Zack3737@aol.com -- whom the police say is Brinkin -- provided graphic commentary on the photos of interracial adult-child sex. Comments included "I loved especially the nigger 2 year old getting nailed. Hope you'll continue so I can see what the little blond bitch is going to get. White Power! White Supremacy! White Dick Rules!"

Police say they linked the AOL address to Brinkin's IP address; he is owner of the account and paid for AOL service with his credit card.

Brinkin, a beloved member of the gay community, led the fight for the city to recognize same-sex partnerships. He served on the Human Rights Commission until 2010 when he retired after 22 years of service. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that same year proclaiming the first week of February "Larry Brinkin Week."

Brinkin's defense attorney Randall Knox chalked the incident up to being a mistake and assured reporters that Brinkin is "genuinely remorseful" and "has a much greater understanding of the damage child pornography creates."

Unfortunately, behavior such as Mr. Brinkin's is all too common in the gay community,

I met Mr. Brinkin through the SF Human Rights Commission.  He was always respectful and helpful.  I was sad when I learned that he had been arrested.

I work as a volunteer with SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests and BishopAccountability).  My role is to track down images of Catholic clergy who sexually abuse/rape children and vulnerable adults.

I only hope the best for Mr. Brinkin.  It's a very painful situation.

This man is a monster who is getting a slap on the wrist. Another white man gets off with practically no punishment while thousands of black and Latino men rot in prisons for doing relatively nothing compared to this man. He is sick and he will never be rehabilitated yet he is free in just six months. He is a pedophile and a racist. How dare his lawyer call his behavior a mistake. The city of sf owes us all an apology for letting him off so easy.

Larry was my friend for 15 years and boss for nearly a decade. I feel sad to learn about his plea deal and that he has admitted to this behavior. Goes to show how heroes/icons can have feet of clay. Horrifying and inexcusable behavior on his part.

For the children, it's very good news that one more pedophile is locked up behind bars.

@p.palpanosHow sad that so-called advocates are circling the wagons and serving as apologists for a convicted racist pedophile. Sick.
