Google Sea Bus: Company Squires Workers in Private Ferry

Evidently fatigued by the number of protesters blockading its buses, Google has found a more secure vehicle to shuttle its workers across the Bay: a private catamaran.

According to news station KPIX 5, the Mountain View search giant now contracts with Los Angeles-based firm Multinational Logistics to ferry tech employees from San Francisco to Redwood City in style, aboard the 149 seat Triumphant. At $50 per docking, it's a little more expensive than the corporate shuttles -- which currently pay $1 for every Muni stop they commandeer -- but it's also less likely to create traffic snarls. And gentrification allegories.

San Francisco Maritime Director Peter Dailey told KPIX reporters that the port plans to study The Triumphant's impact on Maritime traffic over a 30-day trial. At present, he says, the Bay is "under-utilized" -- meaning that other tech companies could easily follow Google's lead and launch their own vessels.

Some reporters expressed surprise that Oracle CEO and America's Cup winner Larry Ellison didn't try it first.

Here's a primer on Google's new watercraft:

It does not address the real issue. Hipsters are mad that people with more money are pushing them out of their neighborhoods. Which is funny because hipsters pushed poorer people out not too long ago. Apple has buses, too, but the focus is on Google since hipsters can't live without their Apple products, ironically.

These are elitist and exclusionary. We need to make sure that all commuters of gender have equal opportunity of access to these alt-buses, so that none of them grow up in a ferry-desert. Google should have to provide additional ferries to other non-google commuters to offset the loss of toll and gas tax revenue.

Very smart! We should take advantage of our waterways! Less cars on the road!!

Why is this whole situation beginning to seem more and more surreal? Is this the city in which I grew up, and my kids grew up?
