Traffic is closed off in parts of the Bayview this afternoon after a driver led police on a high-speed chase, which ended with an overturned SUV and a trip to county jail.

Officer Albie Esparza says the incident happened at about 3:38 p.m. when officers were in the area of Fitzgerald Avenue and Hawes Street conducting a narcotics investigation. When the suspect saw the cops coming after him, he bolted in his car.

The cops chased the driver for a block, west along Fitzgerald Avenue until the driver blew through the intersection at Jennings Street, plowing into an SUV headed north, Esparza says.

"The impact of the collision caused the SUV to over turn onto its side," Esparza says.

After the crash, the suspect ran from the vehicle and police chased him on foot. They eventually caught up to him and took him into custody. After a quick search, police located narcotics in his possession.

Both the suspect and the driver of the SUV were treated for non life-threatening injuries. None of the cops were injured in the chase.

Fitzgerad Avenue is closed to traffic between Third Street and Ingalls Avenue for now.
