Moving day.
Update 9:18 a.m.: Officer Gordon Shyy says all the homeless folks left peacefully on their own and there were no arrests.

Original story 7:55 a.m.: Police just informed us now that there's some "police activity" in the Financial District at this time as the cops and city officials clear out homeless camps.

We don't have much information at this time, but Officer Gordon Shyy tells us that police have descended on Market Street near Drumm and Spear streets where they are working with the Department of Public Works to clear out the homeless camps.

We'll tell you more when we know more.

Considering there have been a lot of attacks near camps, it doesn't seem like something horrible. People not in SF and not near the camps, you have no idea. It would be great to also give assistance, but this isn't necessarily a heartless act.

Reality is, you live in a freaking hell pit. Leave the Bay as long as you still can.

I live in the area. I walk everywhere I go and so I've seen this camp myself. It's terrible indeed that homelessness is such a stain in this city. But, I cannot ignore, nor any of the people who decry this as unjust or untimely, the correlation between crime in that area (robberies, car break-in's especially) and the establishment of this camp. It's also true that some of these people are aggressive toward people who peacefully walk the city. I've seen it and experienced it. Although I don't applaud this action by SF city, I cannot either condemn it because the reality is much more complicated than some people would like us to think.

This is not how you deal with the issue. People need to live in dignity whether on streets, home, apts, etc. SF gov't needs to address the issue of housing and mental health.

the timing certainly sucks. Hey let's hassle the needy during the season of kindness and good will. I am in Nashville TN and the cops have been far more agressive towards the homeless here this week too. Hmmm strange coincidence ,eh?

This is not a good thing. It is no crime to be homeless, last time I checked. Cops have no right to do this.

no point in keeping people around that aren't making profit for the silicon valley overlords.

This explains why it's so empty... Kinda stoked on not getting hassled today, totally bummed (too soon?) that it's all just a temporary sweep, no real help. Woohoo SFPD! Not.

More steps in the direction of getting rid of certain groups that are not wanted in the city.

I'd like to believe that as they're asking the homeless to leave the area that they're also giving them information about local shelters and options of other places to go; alas, I have a strong feeling that is not the case.

Scrooge is alive and living in San Francisco.  Obviously the SFPD did not listen to Pope Francis message yesterday, about helping the homeless?!?
