Kind people are coming out of the woodwork to help raise money that will cover the multiple surgeries Sasha Fleischman must have after being set on fire while riding an Oakland bus Monday evening.

While it's friends and family who created a donation page to help 18-year-old Fleischman who suffered second and third-degree burns as a result of the incident, it's mostly strangers kicking in cash -- as much as $500 -- for the very wounded high school senior.

According to the fundraising page:

Yesterday while sleeping on the bus, someone set Sasha on fire. He is in St Francis Memorial Hospital & will require several surgeries. Please donate to his speedy recovery!

So far, they've raised $14,000 -- and counting. Here's what a few of those donors had to say:

On Monday, at about 5:10 p.m., Fleischman was on the 57-line headed home from Maybeck High School in Berkeley when he dozed off in the back of the bus. Another passenger saw the sleeping teen and lit his skirt on fire. Fleischman awoke and tried to extinguish the flames, but they quickly spread to his arms and legs.

Fleischman, whose given name is Luke, identifies as agender, meaning he doesn't identify as male or female, and feels happy wearing a skirt, his mother Debbie Fleischman told the Oakland Tribune. Yesterday, a 16-year-old Oakland High School boy was arrested in connection to the blaze and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem. According to police, the suspect could face other charges but it's unclear whether those charges would include a hate crime enhancement. Police have not said whether Fleischman's choice of outfit was what motivated the crime.

Fleischman is a straight-A student who was in the process of applying to college, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

That said, we know payday just passed for some of you out there. So here's your chance to do something good with that cash for a change.

The fact that the "blogger" originally questioned 'how badly injured the man -- or his kilt -- was' is reflective of their ignorance, and that of the general population. Had Sasha been attending a Scottish gathering, everyone would be up in arms. More likely a Utilakilt on a human being .... Nice that you are trying to make up for it by now letting the "community" know there are more caring people than YOU, Erin Sherbert, but get over the SKIRT issue, will you? Talk about WTF!

Where should donations be sent? To the school or hospital?

Why do people get so hung up on made-up societal 'norms'? A skirt is a piece of cloth- it's neither good nor bad. People who feel hatred towards others for how they dress, talk, walk, etc are the ones with the problem. We don't put up with that shit here. The exceedingly generous donors renew my faith in humanity

Daniela, this crime was more than likely committed, at least in part and maybe in whole, *because* of the skirt. This isn't sensationalism, it's reporting. Before I heard about the skirt, and other details, I thought it might have been a prank gone horribly wrong. Apparently, it's much worse than that.

This sounds like a hate crime rather than just a malicious assault.

You probably wear pants, Daniela N. Chavira. In some places men would do to you what they did to Sasha for doing that. Please find it in your heart to be more accepting.

I grew up in Oakland and went to Maybeck High School. The school is a very tolerant and accepting garden of learning. Going from there to the mean streets of Oakland was always a rude shock. My
