After a year of searching, police say they've finally tracked down 36-year-old Laurice Barrett, the fugitive wanted for allegedly robbing a woman in the Tenderloin and then killing her 12-year-old dog.

As readers might remember, on Dec. 28, 2012, a woman pulled her car over to the side of the road on Leavenworth near Golden Gate Avenue to use her cell phone. When she stopped the car, an armed man approached her and robbed her, according to police. Barrett allegedly dug inside her pockets, grabbed money, then demanded more.

During the robbery, the victim's loyal (and adorable) Pekingese started barking at the robber; the man told her he'd kill the pup if it didn't quiet down. At that point, the robber yanked the dog by its collar and tossed it into oncoming traffic.

The dog, named Roxy, later died from her wounds.

Police quickly identified Barrett as the suspect, circulating his photo throughout the community. Meanwhile, people saddened by the crime, started kicking in reward money to help find Barrett who was on the lam.

His attempts to elude the cops were successful until recently when investigators got some new leads that led them to Barrett this week, said Sgt. Danielle Newman.

On Wednesday, a team of U.S. Marshals located Barrett in an apartment in Vallejo where he was arrested and charged with robbery and animal cruelty as well as a probation warrant. He's been booked into San Francisco County Jail (see his ,ugshot above).

"The brazen and heinous nature of this crime is appalling," said Don O'Keefe, U.S.Marshal for the Northern District of California. "For someone to carry this act out, in broad daylight and on a busy city street, to me, suggests a certain criminal mentality."

ok i agree he is a monster but wow the comments here seem angrier than versus the child molester who tried to rape the baby. he got sympathy for being sick in the head and needing help.this guy shot a dog and he needs life in prison and no suggested help to rehabilitate? hey pedophiles are monsters too but somehow SF voters protect them in courts.

Perhaps, but now we all know what he looks like - there could be an entirely different outcome for this guy (more than a slap on the hand).
