Watch out for them
Update: Muni Spokesman Paul Rose responds, read his comments at the bottom of this story.

Sad news. An unidentified cyclist was hit and killed by a Muni bus in the city's SOMA neighborhood during the Friday morning commute.

According to news reports, the cyclist was pedaling along Bryant and Division streets at about 8:40 a.m. when he/she was struck.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Muni's Twitter feed, buses have been re-routed around the collision and nearby streets have been closed for now.

We're waiting for a call back from Muni.

Update 10:55 a.m.:
Paul Rose, spokesman for Muni, confirmed the cyclist was male, however, he could not provide details of the incident because Muni is getting "conflicting reports" about what happened. "We're working with the police department to do a full investigation," Rose told us.

The driver of the 27-Bryant bus is a 10-year Muni employee who has been placed on non-driving status at this time. A drug and alcohol test will also be conducted, per standard procedure, Rose said.

"It's a tragic incident and our sympathies go out to the victim and their family," Rose said.

The updated link from the article stated the bus driver may have run a red, which makes it the driver's fault...

So cutting lanes at about 60 was probably not a good idea.We were training for a stage race in Lake Placid. After so many miles and races and being mentored ,riding in traffic was the same thing.I kept my head up and paid attention.

Always drive defensively no matter what you're driving. But I see bicyclists constantly disrespecting the rules of the road. They're wearing out my brakes.

The cyclist ran the red light, so the driver was not at fault. The driver and witnesses were shaken up by the whole thing, and I feel for the family of the man that died today.

Cyclists are not pedestrians at all. They're allowed to ride the same roads and lanes as cars (except freeways of course) with some limits. They are also supposed to obey the same traffic laws. Many times drivers who are unaware of this put cyclists in danger. However I see cyclists break the traffic laws all the time and put themselves in danger. Everyone just try to stay aware out there, watch out for eachother, and follow the rules!

I have to agree, they don't realize they're still pedestrians...

Can't help but notice how many of these tragedies occur in SoMa. :(

It MIGHT have been the Muni bus at fault, but very often it's a selfish, thoughtless, kamikaze bicyclist responsible for getting themselves killed.
