Police say they have arrested 21-year-old Michael Montgomery on suspicion of stabbing 24-year-old Jonathan Denver (pictured right) to death after a Giants game in downtown San Francisco.

According to Sgt. Danielle Newman, Montgomery was arrested this afternoon and booked on homicide charges. An 18-year-old man has also been detained, however he has not been booked into County Jail as of now.

Montgomery, a Lodi resident, was detained last night and booked after he made "incriminating statements" to police. Police have not yet released his mug shot.

The incident, which was sparked by baseball rivalry between the Dodgers and the Giants who played last night, happened at about 11:39 p.m. at Third and Harrison streets. Denver, a plumber from Fort Bragg, was involved in a verbal altercation between two groups of men over the rival teams. The fight became physical and at some point Denver was stabbed. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he later died.

According to the Chron, Denver had taken the day off work to be with his father, who is a big baseball fan and a security guard for the Dodgers. Denver had attended the game with his father, wearing Dodgers gear -- which incited the fight, police said.

Denver's aunt, who did not want to be named, told the newspaper that the family "just wants everyone to know that he was a good-hearted person. He wasn't looking for trouble and wasn't involved in any gang."

extremely unfortunate incident:( i was at the giants game last night and the ambience at the park was really mellow, security was tight and everyone was on the lookout. Ironic enough last night was the Brian Stow fundraiser at the park. sad.

His Dad says he was hit over the head with a chair. Used the knife to protect himself. I wonder how this will play out...

Too much violence nowadays. I'm afraid of crowds & crowd mentality.

Killing over a baseball team?? Another senseless act of violence in America. Peace be with the victim and his family.
