San Francisco police are looking for a woman who reportedly stole a car from the Bayview District this afternoon, leading police on a high-speed chase through the city before getting away.

According to Sgt. Dennis Toomer, at about 1:41 p.m., two cops spotted two people -- a man and a woman -- approaching a pair of cars parked on the 1700 block of LaSalle Street.

The male thief stole one of the cars and when police tried to stop him, he allegedly rammed the police car with the stolen vehicle, Toomer said.

The thief then drove onto the sidewalk, hit a parked vehicle, and then hit a home in the area, causing plenty of damage. The crook jumped out of the car and ran, shedding his firearm as he fled. The cops tracked him down and he was taken into custody along with his recovered firearm.

The cops were not injured, police said.

While all that was going on, the female thief had driven off in a second stolen car; she sped away, with police units trailing her briefly. The pursuit was quickly halted "due to the risk of the public," Toomer said.

The cops later found the second stolen vehicle unoccupied in the Portola neighborhood, but there's been no sign of the woman, Toomer said.
