Jonathan Denver, a Dodgers fan, was stabbed in downtown San Francisco
Update 3 p.m.: Officer Albie Esparza tells us that one of the two men detained made "incriminating statements" regarding last night's stabbing and will be booked into San Francisco County Jail on homicide charges. Until then, his name won't be released.

Update 12:40 p.m.: San Francisco police confirmed that the dispute was sparked by the longtime baseball rivalry between the Dodgers and the Giants. Two people, ages 18 and 21, have been arrested in connection to the stabbing death of Jonathan Denver, who was a Dodgers fan. Police have not yet released the names of the suspects, according to the Chron.

Original story 6:59 a.m.: Police say it was 24-year-old Jonathan Denver who was stabbed to death last night following a confrontation between Giants and Dodgers fans after the baseball game in downtown San Francisco.

According to Sgt. Danielle Newman, the confrontation happened at about 11:39 p.m. following the Giants game where they played the Dodgers. The men were near Third and Harrison streets when the verbal dispute got physical.

During the physical fight, Denver, who was wearing Dodgers gear, was stabbed and taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he died.

Newman said police detained three people in the area and are interviewing witnesses as of this morning.

It's certainly not the first time the longtime baseball rivalry has led to violence. In 2011, Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten nearly to death by Dodgers fans. Police later arrested Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood in connection to the attack.

Sports encourage violence and aggression! They should be banned from TV, public gatherings and our schools! They are corrupting and killing the youth!

We should ban public sporting events if things like this continue to happen. Sports encourage violent behavior and lead to death!
