Update 8:54 a.m.: The Chron is reporting that it was a 17-year-old boy who was killed this morning in a major car accident along Gough Street. According to the paper, an 80-year-old elderly woman was driving a Mercedes-Benz at 80 mph west on Pine Street when she plowed into a minivan stopped at a light at Gough Street just before 7 a.m. Both cars rolled over and the boy was killed. The boy's mother and sister were inside the van and were hurt.

Witnesses, including a patrol officer, saw the driver going at a high-rate of speed for several blocks before the accident. "The vehicle was going so fast, he [the officer] didn't have time to even activate his lights before the crash took place," Police Chief Greg Suhr told KTVU. The impact sent the minivan airborne.

Original Story 7:48 a.m.:
San Francisco police are warning drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area near Gough and Pine this morning where there was a fatal car crash earlier.

Sgt. Danielle Newman says one person has died and there are other injuries; authorities are at the scene now helping the other victims.

"Please avoid the area," Newman says. "A large SFFD and SFPD presence is expected for most of the morning."

We'll keep you posted.

Was she having a heart attack while the car was driving that fast? Or the brakes failed? Stuck accelerator/gas pedal?? Damn. Such a terrible loss.

One death and some "injuries"? Sounds like someone was under the influence.

Why the hell is anyone going that fast on any street in SF? 80 years old or not, that woman should go to jail for manslaughter.

Van ness is an indy car race going south as early as 530 am. Took the same route for years same time and i was surprised to never see anyone slam into anything.

Elderly woman doing upwards of 80 weaving in and around cars for blocks in a hurry finally slams into a stopped minivan killing a 17 year old. Such a shame. People speed on gough and franklin in the am all the time in such a hurry. Definitely not worth it. Hope they throw the book at this lady.

That's Lower Pacific Heights, isn't it? I think of Polk Gulch as the other side of Van Ness.

That explains the helicopters. Given the way people drive around those one way timed streets, I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more often, but I do see near misses all the time. PS: I've heard this neighborhood called a lot of things, but Polk Gulch is certainly a new one

So someone sped through the light most likely? Damn, it wasn't even 8:00 a.m. yet. What's wrong with people? Used to live just a couple blocks down on Pine. Very peaceful neighborhood, and then in an instant ...
