Demonstrators are planning to pack downtown Oakland again tonight for a national day of action demanding justice for Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old Florida kid who was shot to death by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer.

Protesters will follow the usual drill: gather at Frank Ogawa Plaza (aka Oscar Grant Plaza) at 5:30 p.m. where they will march through the streets in honor of Martin and other young black men who they say have been victims of "state, vigilantes or inner city violence."

"We are coming out to say no more senseless killings of young black and brown children," said Cephus Johnson, uncle of Oscar Grant III who was shot to death by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. "And if you continue to kill us, we will continue to be in these streets."

"We are building a movement made up by the people and we won't stop until we see real change in how we are treated in our communities and in this country," he added.

Last year, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement released a report that demonstrated that every 28 hours an African American is murdered by police, vigilantes, or security guards, according to the Oscar Grant Foundation.

Oakland is prepping for tonight's rally as best it can. The cops are going to be "on hand" to facilitate what they hope will be peaceful demonstrations. If the rally turns into another night of vandalism, chaos, and violence, then the cops will be on hand to facilitate arrests.

In mid-July chaos broke out in downtown Oakland after a jury cleared Zimmerman in the shooting death of Martin. Protesters rallied for three days straight vandalizing businesses, spray-painting and shattering storefronts, tossing fireworks at the cops. Later, they entered the freeway entrances, blocking traffic through downtown.

So before you hop BART and make your way back to the East Bay tonight, read these safety tips:

  • Stay tuned to local TV and radio stations for information.
  • If possible, park your car in a secure, off-street location.
  • Remove or secure trash receptacles.
  • Be sure your business is well lit. Good lighting increases visibility -- and also increases the effectiveness of any closed-circuit TV system.
  • If you have a closed-circuit TV system, be sure it is working and is turned on. Save recordings of documented criminal activity.
  • Make sure your building has quality locks on the doors and windows. Deadbolt locks are a must for exterior doors.
  • All exterior doors with a gap should be covered with a steel plate to prevent the door from being pried open.
  • Leave the cash drawer empty and open after business hours.

What about the couple who were carjacked, kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed by 5 bm and 1 bw? Why is there no outrage for that?

No rally tonight. Not at all. In fact, was downtown at 8pm and enjoyed an outside terrace with a whole group of different people. As one who was there the last time and didn't like the windows being smashed in but think that more rally's are good, didn't appreciate the safety list.

Hey SF Weekly. How about using an actual image from a Trayvon Rally instead of a provocative one from an Occupy Eviction???? BAD JOB.

Why does the black community refuse to accept the fact that Trayvon has ALREADY received his justice. Zimmerman was tried by a jury of his peers and found NOT GUILTY, that is how our justice system works

Interesting that they also didn't release a study showing how often a black person shoots another black person.

Jesus, I'm all for that, but they're completely going about this the wrong way. Zimmerman walked (wrongfully in my opinion). Next up civil suit. Work within the system, people. This is nothing more than a vent session to nowhere (but backward).
