Port of Oakland Shuts Down After Worker Dies
The Port of Oakland is shut down until 6 p.m. today after an employee died Tuesday evening, locking out lines of truckers waiting to make deliveries this morning.
Joy Daniels, 45, of Suisun City, died after crashing her truck while on the job, however, the Alameda County Coroner's Office says that for now investigators are treating it as a death by natural cause. The Alta Bates Medical Center told the coroner the cause of death was natural, but couldn't disclose what caused Daniels' death.
Sgt. Patricia Daniels says the Coroner's Office will perform a simple crosscheck of the death certificate when it is made available to them.
"I cant say what caused her death because I don't know," said Mike Villeggiante, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 10.
What Villeggiante can say is that Daniels was involved in an accident where she crashed her truck yesterday, but he is still gathering information about what happened, and will be headed to the Port today to investigate.
Villeggiante said the primary reason for the closure of the Port yesterday evening and throughout today is to make time to investigate what happened so that it won't happen again.
