Oops! KTVU Names Asiana Pilots as Sum Ting Wong and Ho Lee Fuk (Update)

dumbanchor2.jpg
More like Holy shit!

Latest Update, July 14: Asiana Airlines, not surprisingly unamused by the whole thing, thinks an on-screen apology may not be sufficient, it said in a statement:

"The reputation of the four pilots and of the company had been seriously damaged by this report. The company is reviewing taking legal action against both KTVU-TV and the NTSB."

Update: The NTSB has released a statement stating an intern is responsible for confirming the incorrect names. Sounds like someone's summer internship is over.

KTVU has also provided further explanation into why they said these names on air: They didn't say them out loud before rattling them off during their live taping and they didn't confirm with the NTSB employee (intern) on their position within the organization. They did, however, call to verify the correct spelling of the names.

Update: Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the NTSB, just confirmed to SF Weekly that the NTSB did not release the names of the pilots of flight 214 to KTVU, or any news organization, for that matter.

Original Story:
Local station KTVU totally screwed up the names of Asiana Flight 214 pilots when announcing them on live television today, and we're a little worried the name "Ho Lee Fuk" might actually go down in history.

So just to correct the record: The ill-fated Boeing 777 wasn't actually being steered by Mr. Fuk and his co-pilots Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, and Bang Ding Ow.

KTVU rushed to fix the blunder and issued an apology, blaming the NTSB for the fuck-up. The apology didn't do much to stop screenshots of the offensive names from making their rounds through the blogosphere.

Oh, look -- here they are:

And here's a video of the newscaster announcing the names with complete sincerity -- with "Fuk" pronounced "Fook," lest you suspect the station of impropriety:

Note: Asiana actually released the names of two pilots -- the ones allegedly responsible for the botched landing -- on Sunday. Junior pilot Lee Gang-guk had 43 hours of experience flying the Boeing jet; his supervisor Lee Jeong-min tried to take over to abort the crash.

Someone call Ron Burgundy, this is a story for him.

They should. The pilots should too. That's a major flub; however, Asiana is reaching when they say that THIS is what damaged the pilot's/airline's reputation. Says a lot about the insensitivity of the intern and the news station though. Just because names of some other cultures may be considered uncommon in the U.S., doesn't mean they deserve any less detailed attention. It's pretty obvious that they are WRONG. If another country did this to us, heads would roll.

Im pretty sure the attorney for the defense is going to argue the crashing of the plane and killing of people is what ruined their reputation.....not Ho Lee Shit....or We Gonna Crash.......idiots!!!!!!!!

"This has ruined the reputation of the pilots". No, the reputation was ruined when they CRASHED THE PLANE.

it's going to take more than indignation about a stupid (really stupid) mistake to make the world forget their horrible mismanagement & disastrous consequences.

They called to check the spelling!!!! They're not absolved.

I don't blame them, but I'm curious what legal grounds they are going to base their case. An intern may have sent the names to the station, but it's pretty obvious — if not in print, then the moment the anchor began reading them aloud. KTVU isn't 100% absolved of blame just because they blindly reported what was given to them.

takes the heat off their pilots and might help them get back some of the money they will be paying in lawsuits.

Ridiculous, but I guess they figure, hey, any source of income they can get since they're going to be hit with suit after suit and will need the money.

Who's gonna represent Asiana in court?  Wi Su Yu?

Now Asiana wants to sue KTVU. If they didn't have Wi Fuk Up flying and crashing the airplane there wouldn't be a problem. Like Barreta said "don't do the crime unless you can do the time". Asiana's untrained flunkies crashed the plane.

I know! this is so ridiculous that I had to take a double take. The big question, How could the News network be So idiotic and irresponsible to not notice this EPIC mistake? this will go down in the history of news network FAILS at the top of the list. They blamed it on an intern.... yeah whatever, wake up Mr. Network supervisor and take some accountability and send out a serious apology. These news networks are mostly useless and filter real news anyway and I will bet that they were in such a big HURRY to be the FIRST ONES to announce any info that they made this HUGE oversight, it actually really says a lot about how incompetent these people are. Mistakes happen but This is really unacceptable and offensive, people DIED and its just so racist that if you laugh this off I question your moral and ethical compass has been corrupted. Some sick twisted racist opportunist hacker somehow infiltrated the system and just pulled an unexpected hit here. I mean how could this happen, seriously? Who did this? really? How did they not notice. Wow overall WOW.

@Tim Hancock This was NOT a network.  It was a local station.  Nothing to do with a network. There is a big difference.  I would hope you understand that, but I wouldn't bet on it. It makes your rant a bit pointless.  There was no network involved.  Apparently someone at KTVU came up with, or was given, the list and confirmed it with an intern at NTSB.  Not a good situation, but no need to get your panties all in a twist--especially considering the major error in your comment.
