Medical authorities say it was 24-year-old Melsan Godoy who was shot and killed in the Tenderloin district over the weekend.

On Saturday at about 9 p.m., police witnessed two groups of shooting at each other on the 800 block of O'Farrell Street. Godoy, a San Francisco resident, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene; one other man remains in critical condition, police said.

An SFPD officer who saw the shooting, fired at one of the armed suspects, but missed, and started chasing the alleged shooter, said Sgt. Dennis Toomer.

The officer caught up with the suspect and took him into custody. Two guns were also recovered from the scene.

Homicide investigators are still trying to determine if Gody and the other man injured were
involved in the original altercation. It's also unclear at this time if the shooting was gang related.
