Not Just BART, But Pretty Much the Whole Damn City of Oakland Is Going on Strike

Welcome to Oakland
Along with not being able to BART to work come Monday, you also won't get your street swept or sewer-line fixed if you're living in Oakland.

Oakland city workers this morning announced the big news that they, along with BART employees, will walk off the job on Monday at 7 a.m., in protest of stalled labor negotiations.

In other words, Monday will feel much like a holiday, except you'll have to work and still try to get that long list of errands done.

The silver lining, if any, is that parking enforcement will also be on strike, so this might be your one day to park wherever you damn please and not pay a cent.

BART workers confirmed they will be at the picket lines at 2 a.m. on Monday, when the first shift of BART employees typically start work.

"Unless a great deal is signed by Sunday, which I doubt is going to happen," says Gary Jimenez, vice president of SEIU Local 1021, one of the many unions calling for a strike on Monday.

The unions, including SEIU Local 1021 and the Professional and Technical Engineers, Local 21, called this one-day strike "historic." The last time the city workers went on strike was in 1946, Jimenez told reporters.

But after 15 weeks of unresolved labor talks, the unions, which represent more than 1,500 city workers, claim there's no other choice.

"We did not choose to be on strike, we're being forced to be on strike," says Dwight McElroy, a public works employee.

While city workers -- including clerical, maintenance, and public works employees -- are planning to strike for only one day, Jimenez says the BART strike could last longer.

More details coming ...

May turn into a General Strike - the working class really needs to do this.

as a regular rider of all public transport, i support the strike and hope others see that these workers are also supporting riders by calling out the bosses, who collect their obscene paychecks at our expense

such bullshit...these are some of the highest paid transit workers, most of whom's jobs don't even require a $150K college degree to sit in a booth and push buttons...and they have healthcare and benefits above and beyond most privately employed people in this city...and their greedy strike action is only going to hurt all of the other middle class people trying to get by...Bart employees make on average $78,980 w/o the top paid management salaries...just behind NYC transit workers...this strike is bullshit...and so are the crybabies behind it...way to hurt everyone else...

People need to go on strike to show solidarity with their fellow workers! Labor creates all wealth!

Great point Andrea! This is just as bad as rioting in your own neighborhood. People need to get to work to pay bills. This is a selfish move, Period.

@Andrea E Taylor, wow!?!?! Pretty naive and misguided viewpoint. Maybe you should simply be fired for being ignorant.

Couldn't be more pleased w/ this news. I am calling for not only a BART strike, but a Muni, SamTrans, Caltrain, AC Transit, and Bay Area Toll Authority strike ALL AT ONCE. Forget this half-a$$ed strike business, let's shut this place down!! People need to learn how to ride bikes, walk, boat, run, scoot, skate, and so on...

And nothing of value was lost.

Just plain dumb. It's too bad we no longer have the days where you can be simply be fired for going on strike if your job impacts so many people. (Remember Ronald Reagan firing all those airline workers for going on strike?)

I still think we need to change Oakland's name to Fuckit.

@Kay Karpus Walker The 'working' class needs to be kicked in their ass en masse.

Only an old leftist fool living in the Hills could put worth such a MORONIC idea.

@richard493 No, only the intelligent mind working with capital in the market creates wealth. Marx's labor theory of value has been discredited for 150 years by all economists from left to right. Read Human Action by Von Mises and Atlas Shrugged by Rand.

@richard493Labor is supposed to create value, not wealth. There's a difference. Labor creates labor. Wealth is created by interest-bearing debt, which is created by the purchase of consumer goods on credit, whether it's a better mousetrap or a sky full of surveillance drones.

@William Dolan I lost both of my legs in an accident 5 years ago. Money is real tight and I just took a pay cut. I have to get to work to support my family. How am I supposed to get to work Mr Know It All?

Regan also released all the SSI nuts in Mental Institutions in the name of the almighty dollar.  Now they are out there free and disturbed...

Yeah what an asshole...Ronald Regan should be ashamed for destroying the founding principals of this Nation.  Americans left England to escape Government/corporate oppression. Tyranny taxation and disrespect of the people who built this nation is UNACCEPTABLE...slap on a RedCoat we will wait until we see the whites of your eyes.

@Andrea E Taylor You are an embarrassment to Oakland. I sincerely hope you get majorly screwed by your employer someday.

@Andrea E Taylor Yeah, that worked out really well.

(Oh, and it was air-traffic controllers, not "airline workers.")

@Paul Varga

I think your remark will be removed shortly by moderation along with my comment but I tend to agree with you, Paul.  BART unions and front line employees are attempting to put the screws to their riders.  Hopefully management will bring in scabs (at 30% less in salary than union members) and replace the $80K a year idiots that don't appreciate what they already have.  As for Oakland employees striking I bet Monday will be a banner day without any cops on the beat.  I predict 100 murders and too many rapes to count along with pickpockets, mayhem, armed robberies and carjackings galore!  Anyone with a brain should use it and stay out of Oakland on Monday for their own safety.

@Jorge Junior And no, the police are not on strike.

alani2

@Jorge Junior You must mean the Police. They are the biggest thugs in  Oakland which is why they are now under Federal Receivership. Think about this while you are knocking Oakland; if you are an informant the police will not arrest you no matter what your crime. Those thugs you are talking about are given Carte Blanc by the police to rob, kill, and steal. The only time they are at risk of being charged is if they shoot a policemen. Yet over 70% of Oakland's Budget is spent on the Police Department.

@ron7777777 The more pertinent question is why does a man with no legs have to commute to work? Maybe we can ask those deeper questions while mobility is a bit less convenient for all, instead of only for those who depend on mechanical devices.

wiseoldsnail
wiseoldsnail

@ron7777777 sorry for your struggle ... the strike is addressing the issue of constantly rising fares while bosses rake in big money ... hopefully your own bosses will accept your valid claim of not being able to show up ... and hopefully fares will not rise again, which will be good for you and me

@kingmidas3000 No the liberals' Lanterman-Prettis Act did that precisely because they were not being helped in the prisons mislabeled 'mental' hospitals. Reagan only signed what the legislature properly passed.

@kingmidas3000

. . . or they are in prison, costing us many times what it would have cost to give them proper care.
