You Might Want to Bring Your Own Hot Dog to the Giants Game Tonight

Ballpark concession workers are cooking up another controversy tonight at the Giants game, asking all fans to cart their own food to the stadium instead of purchasing the overpriced hot dogs and nachos and such.

Their request seems fair enough if you are still 48 hours away from payday. But this is less about you saving money and more about them making money. Concession workers have been fighting with their management to get a better contract that includes the usual trifecta for happiness: job security, decent health benefits, and more money.

The latest demonstration is part of Unite Here Local 2's campaign dubbed "The Giant Zero" which among other things is keeping a ticker on how many days it has been since concession workers received a raise. As of today, it's 1,539 days, according to the union.

On May 25, more than 750 workers held a one-day strike against Centerplate, the San Francisco Giants' food and beverage subcontractor, which was a "significant escalation in the workers' campaign to achieve a new contract with wage increases, decent benefits, and job security."

Negotiations have been at a standstill since Centerplate's proposal would severely limit workers' access to healthcare and keep in place the three-year wage freeze from 2010-2012, despite the incredible financial success of the baseball team and its concessionaire over those years, the union states.

Concession workers voted by 97 percent to authorize the union to call up to 5 days of strike and a boycott of concessions.

If you're worried about the future of the bacon-wrapped hot dog, then take part in this community rally tonight. Grab some gnarly lunch meat from 7-Eleven and go fight for those who work hard to clog your arteries.

The rally starts at 6 p.m. (don't worry you will still see the first pitch) at the Willie Mays Plaza.
