Cops Looking for Man Who Sexually Assaulted Boy in Berkeley Bathroom
Police are on the hunt for a man who reportedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy inside a public bathroom at the Berkeley Marina yesterday afternoon.
Berkeley Marina turns into a crime scene
Berkeley Police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss says the incident happened at about 1:37 p.m. when the boy told his parents he needed to use the restroom; his parents allowed him to go alone, and that's where he encountered the assailant.
The boy ran out of the bathroom and told his parents who called police.
The cops arrived and blocked off the Marina as they combed the area looking for the man. Police took posts on University Avenue and Marina Boulevard where they visually inspected the interior of all cars leaving the area. Officers explained to each driver that they were looking for a sexual predator on the lam, asking them to be on the lookout, Kusmiss said.
The East Bay Regional Parks police used helicopters to search for the suspect while officers from multiple departments fanned out on foot, on motorcycles, bicycles, dirt bikes and patrol cars to check every possible hiding place, Kusmiss said.
"These investigations take time due to the age of the child and sensitive nature of these types of crimes. Family members, members of BPD's Special Victims Unit and others are with the child," Kusmiss said in a statement.
Police did not have a complete description of the suspect, but said they are looking for an African-American man with blonde hair with green streaks in it, according to the Oakland Tribune. "Police did not know if the man was wearing a wig." The suspect was also reportedly wearing a green shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers
