Newborn Giraffe Is Really Tall
It's been quite an amusing week for local animal news: Dogs were forced to wear stupid party hats, and a hipster cat with a very real handlebar mustache scored a t-shirt deal with Urban Outfitters.
SF Zoo That's a baby?
The only way news of a baby giraffe being born at the S.F. Zoo could possibly overshadow the above bizarreness is to physically tower above.
Lucky for this baby giraffe, her sheer height has kept her from getting shortchanged in the news. The not-yet-named calf was born on May 22, weighing 130 pounds and standing 5-foot-10 tall.
The calf's mother,11-year-old Kristin, is a Tampa native -- and a busy woman; she's already given birth to three other giraffes. The calf's father, 11-year-old Floyd, hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Currently, mother and calf are nursing and bonding in the Osher Family Giraffe Lodge, which is closed to the public until further notice.
For the next few weeks, the calf and mother will have access to the outdoor corral on the north side of the Giraffe Lodge until they are introduced into the African Savanna exhibit. Check for updates about the baby giraffe.
