Deputy Michael Roberts
Authorities discovered the body of 56-year-old Michael Roberts, a veteran deputy with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, near Dock B in the Vallejo Marina yesterday afternoon.

Earlier that morning, police had found Roberts' unmanned boat adrift near the Vallejo Municipal Marina; his keys were still in the ignition and his cellphone and wallet were on board, according to police. A dive team and helicopter searched for Roberts through the day, and a work crew discovered his body at about 3:10 p.m.

Monday had been his day off from work, said Susan Fahey, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department.

Upon hearing the news, Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi issued the following statement:

It is with great sadness that I announce the sudden and tragic death of Deputy Michael Roberts. Early this morning the U. S. Coast Guard received a report of an unmanned boat in the vicinity of the Vallejo Marina. An extensive search was launched. The search was concluded this afternoon with the discovery of Deputy Roberts' body in the waters where he loved to fish.

On behalf of the San Francisco Sheriffs Department I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Solano County Sheriffs Office and the Vallejo Police Department for their assistance.

Please join me in conveying our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Deputy Roberts and all those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

Roberts, a Hercules resident, was married with kids. He had been with the Sheriff's Department since 1998.
