Cops Kill Hammer-Wielding Man in Potrero Hill
The suspect reportedly called police at about 9:40 p.m., claiming he had just stabbed his brother-in-law during a family dispute. Police could hear the victim, only identified as a 61-year-old man, in the background pleading for help.
When police arrived to the home, located on the 900 block of De Haro, the male suspect emerged from a doorway inside the house, carrying a weapon that was later determined to be a hammer, said Officer Gordon Shyy.
The suspect started walking toward the officers with the hammer raised; the cops ordered him to drop the weapon, but the man ignored them, and continued advancing toward the officers. Fearing for their own lives, one of the cops fired his gun, hitting the suspect, Shyy said.
The suspect was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he later died, police said. The Medical Examiner's Office would not release the suspect's name until the family had been contacted.
The male victim was also taken to the hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. He's expected to survive, and is cooperating with police in this investigation.
This incident is being investigated by the SF District Attorney's Office, Office of Citizen Complaints, SFPD Internal Affairs Criminal, Administrative Divisions, as well as SFPD Homicide Detail.
Officers involved are placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
