A 60-year-old man died last night after police shot him when he refused to drop his weapon as he walked toward officers.

The suspect reportedly called police at about 9:40 p.m., claiming he had just stabbed his brother-in-law during a family dispute. Police could hear the victim, only identified as a 61-year-old man, in the background pleading for help.

When police arrived to the home, located on the 900 block of De Haro, the male suspect emerged from a doorway inside the house, carrying a weapon that was later determined to be a hammer, said Officer Gordon Shyy.

The suspect started walking toward the officers with the hammer raised; the cops ordered him to drop the weapon, but the man ignored them, and continued advancing toward the officers. Fearing for their own lives, one of the cops fired his gun, hitting the suspect, Shyy said.

The suspect was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he later died, police said. The Medical Examiner's Office would not release the suspect's name until the family had been contacted.

The male victim was also taken to the hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. He's expected to survive, and is cooperating with police in this investigation.

Put the hammer down and go to court. Don't fucking try to attack a cop! As (For that matter, don't use the hammer to attack anyone! Then everybody is happy!) Look, I'm with yah when a cop shots a teenager because they thought Terri cell phone was a gun...but on this one, yeah hard to automatically question the cops judgment. Need more info, and the fact that the guy was 61 doesn't matter...I know a couple late 60's guys who could kick most people's ass, especially if given a hammer.

I believe they KILL for the FUN of it sometimes! Like this story...60 YEARS OLD..oops..what about a TASER....60 Years old..how about a Shoulder Shot in the ARM with the Hammer..?  I ama Combat Marine..I know about Weapons  and TIME ...they had TIME to STOP him correcttly...seems in a LOT of CASES..they NEVER WOUND..it,s always KILL..same way when they go after Animals..not STUN..it,s KILL...some get GUN Happy buy I think there should be an INVESTIGATION with CIVILIAN INTERVENTION..this sees like MURDER...and I know these COPS were YOUNGER...INVESTIGATE....

If policemen are trained to shoot it would seem that they would be trained yo  disarming a man who has a hammer as a weapon.  Many times it has happened that police officers shoot a person dead when the man is being dangerous but not armed with a gun. I think policemen need to be trained not to let their feelings interfere with their duty. the policeman in this case could have easily hit the man in the arm or hand and the hammer would fall off his hand. I believe the policemen are not thinking correctly, that they are taking the actions of the dead man as an insult to their position as policemen. The policeman needed to have training on dealing with an angry person and needed to disarm him and take him to jail, but not take his position as a policeman personally, but realizing he was facing a perturbed human being who needed help not a bullet that would take his life.

oh no not those dangerous hammer wielding men again, they should all be killed without a trial!!oh wait...how will houses be built without hammer wielding people, how will shelves be hung? what is a wielding hammer? and do we want people who if incarcerated for their crimes would possible serve 3 years killed without a trial, thats a death sentence for at best aggravated assault without physical injury..if we are going to hand out the death penalty for aggravated assault without physical injury we should do it in the courts too not just in the streets.
