A 7-year-old girl and her grandmother were hit by a garbage truck early Wednesday morning as the two were walking in Telegraph Hill.

Officer Albie Esparza says the accident happened just before 8 a.m. when the girl and her 66-year-old grandmother were walking across the street at Broadway and the Embarcadero.

The garbage truck was on Broadway and turning south onto the Embarcadero when the two pedestrians were hit. The girl's foot was crushed, and she was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where she was undergoing surgery.

Both victims are expected to live, Esparza said.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident. "At this point it appears to be an unfortunate collision and it's unknown who was at fault," Esparza told us.
