Woman Says She Lied About Being Beaten and Raped at UC Santa Cruz

Categories: WTF?

It's always a good clue when there are no clues
A 21-year-old woman who claimed she was the victim of a crime is now being investigated for possibly committing a crime.

Police are telling reporters that the woman, whose name is not being released, admitted she lied about being raped while visiting the UC Santa Cruz campus on Feb. 17; the woman told police she was badly beaten and sexually assaulted in broad daylight near some classrooms.

The alleged assault was widely reported in the media, alarming students across campus; university police increased security patrols and safety escorts while offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who helped them capture the attacker.

But after police spent time, money, and manpower investigating the rape, the woman reportedly recanted her story and told police in the last day that the attack in fact didn't happen at all.

"We have worked around the clock and confirmed that the information that she had provided regarding the event was false," UC Santa Cruz police Chief Nader Oweis told CBS.

Nobody was arrested in connection to the false attack, however, police have now forwarded the latest iteration of this crime to the District Attorney's Office where prosecutors will determine whether to file charges against the woman.

Although it's safe to say there isn't a known rapist on the loose, police are asking students to continue exercising good judgment and caution.

If you are expecting real reportage here, don't waste your time. Facts take a backseat to exciting allegations over here.

making an allegation, having the police waste huge amounts of time, getting folks scared, recanting = not a victimless offense.

Oh and also Frankie and I have argued this before to a great extent. That's what I meant by bothering me. Thanks for the unwarranted opinion.

I didn't say he was bothering me. I said that people so willing to say she's a liar without understanding the ramifications of putting yourself on the line as identifying as a rape victim bother me. I know enough people whose cases were dropped or backed out of theirs due to feelings of shame and guilt. I find it sad that people seldom ask themselves why rape is so under reported and why women would choose to give up on prosecution. That's an answer I'd be more interested in hearing.

It's interesting that this woman considers a polite and reasonable discussion over a news article to be 'bothering' her when she was the first to enter her two cents...

I'm not bothered by them. I'm bothered by the fact that people are always so eager to discredit a woman who said she was RAPED. If you are going to insert your opinion on something you don't have experience with (reporting sex crimes), I insist you don't. I know what the legal system/the stigma/how friends, family and acquaintances perceive you after is like, I can assure you.

it came up in my feed, blame FB if you're bothered by false rape allegations, you don't have me to blame for it

Sure, Frankie. Of course. But the fact is about 2 in 10,000 rape stories are fake, so I'm very skeptical about the likeliness of that. Also, why do you insist on bothering me when I share an opinion about rape? This isn't even my own Facebook. This is a thread started by a news outlet that operates outside of us, and I really don't think other people want to watch us talk/argue/debate/whatever.

Or, they investigated and found out she was lying? Surely you recognize that's a possibility

Many women retract their stories once they hit the public eye because of the amount of scrutiny they are under, the social stigma and a change in the behavior of those they are closest to. People ARE NOT friendly when you say you were a victim of any kind of sex crime, from rape to sexual harassment. At best (and I use that term loosely), she is simply overwhelmed and doesn't want to go through with it anymore. At worst, she is being threatened or coerced.

who knows why she lied? but it was a complete waste of resources and time

A better question could be what pressures exist to make her change her story and go thru such humiliation twice? Sounds like she's being threatened to me.
