Loved ones of Silvia Patricia Tun Cun, 29, and Francisco Gutierrez, 26, both of whom were killed in a car accident on New Year's Day, are asking the public to kick in some cash to help get their remains back to their families in Central America.

The San Francisco Archdiocese is coordinating the collection to help the families pay for airfare, burial, and embalming costs, which could cost as much as $12,000, said Julio Escobar, spokesman for the Archdiocese.

Police say 19-year-old David Morales -- a documented gang member in San Francisco -- was at the Valencia Gardens housing projects on Jan. 1, when he got into an argument with three others. He allegedly shot at the trio before fleeing through the Mission District.

A few minutes later -- about 7:45 a.m. -- a cop spotted Morales' vehicle at 21st and Mission streets; officers stopped Morales, and as they approached his car, he hit the gas, taking off at a "high rate of speed." Before police could even get into their car to chase him, Morales allegedly slammed into a Tun Cun's vehicle at 21st and Van Ness, which rammed into a convenient store, killing 26-year-old Francisco Gutierrez as he entered the business, according to police.

Morales has been charged with murder.

A memorial mass was held on Tuesday for Tun Cun, whose 7-year-old son lives in Guatemala, and a viewing for Gutierrez was held Wednesday, followed by a 7 p.m. service. The viewing will continue today with a closing with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Escobar stressed that both low-income families are in need of help for the funeral expenses, and your donation will be very much appreciated to the following accounts:

  • Beneficiary name: Silvia Patricia Tun Cun/ Evangelina Tun Cun (sister of the deceased) Chase Bank -- Account #163712120

  • Beneficiary name: Francisco Gutierrez/ Orlin Gutierrez (brother of the deceased) Bank of America -- Account #0272371438

Thank you!
