Supervisor David Campos Wants to Name SFO After Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk is to San Franciscans what George Bush is to Texans -- a friggin' hero.

That's probably why Supervisor David Campos has decided our international airport should be named after the gay civil rights guru, an honor that's typically reserved for former presidents. According to KTVU, Campos -- who is openly gay -- intends to propose today a charter amendment to rename SFO "Harvey Milk-San Francisco International Airport."

If his colleagues on the board agree, the proposal would go to San Francisco voters for approval in the fall. And if voters agree to this name, SFO would be the first airport in the entire world named after an openly gay person.

If San Francisco were to name the airport after Milk, we'd get to watch the 68 countries served by SFO that also criminalize homosexuality cringe -- which might make up for the baggage fees we now pay.

"For young gay people in an illegal place looking up at a monitor and being able to point to this international airport named after an LGBT advocate, it gives them the green light to authenticity," Stuart Milk, Harvey Milk's nephew, said. "It's a major representation that [they] are being celebrated somewhere in the world in a high-level way."

About 41 million passengers pass through San Francisco International every year, and while they make their way through SFO, why not learn all about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office when he scored a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

Sadly, his political term and his life were cut short a year later when his colleague Supervisor Dan White assassinated him and Mayor George Moscone inside City Hall.

Needless to say, if the measure passes, red staters' layovers at SFO might come with an added bonus: our delicious schadenfreude.
