Proposition 8: Supreme Court Takes No Action on Gay Marriage

Since last week, San Francisco has been anxiously awaiting the court's decision on whether it will hear the Prop 8. appeal. But today, the court took no action -- again -- on Prop 8. as well as several other cases concerning the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
The court could take up the issue on Friday, when the justices hold their final conference of the year to consider pending appeals.

In February, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Prop. 8 unconstitutional because it "serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California and to officially reclassify their relationship and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples."
Prop. 8 supporters appealed to the Supreme Court, keeping gay marriage in limbo in California. The state has put gay marriage on hold until the Supreme Court decides whether or not to hear the case.
