Medical authorities have identified the pedestrian who was killed yesterday in SOMA as 78-year-old Jack Wing.

Wing was walking at Market and Beale streets about 2:30 p.m. when a person driving a truck hit him, police said. Wing, an Albany resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with police; meanwhile investigators were recreating the accident to determine what happened -- whether Wing was in a crosswalk and walking legally, said Officer Carlos Manfredi.

Coincidentally, the accident occurred the same day the District Attorney launched a campaign called "What's the Rush?" asking pedestrians and drivers to be more cautious during the holidays when streets are packed with shoppers.
