Gay and Lesbian Couples Must Wait Longer for Prop. 8 Decision on Gay Marriage

Renata and Lori
Gay and Lesbian couples in San Francisco and across the state have put their lives on hold -- again -- as they await the Supreme Court's final decision on Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage. The court announced today that it would review the legality of the law, which means the debate will drag out through 2013.

Couples like San Francisco residents Renata Moirera, 35, and her partner, 29-year-old Lori Bilella, have been together for five years, and are eagerly waiting to tie the knot. As prospective parents, the couple is concerned that Moirera's dual Brazilian and American citizenship will create problems for their children unless they can legally marry.

"There's a lot of struggles that our straight friends don't have to deal with," says Moirera.

The couple plans to have a ceremony in New York next September, but really, they want to exchange their vows here in San Francisco -- their home. "It really is heartbreaking that I might have to fly to another state to be recognized as a wife," says Moirera.

Bay Area residents Rev. Roland Stringfellow and his partner, Jerry Peterson, are also hoping to get the court's permission to marry. "As clergy members, both Jerry and I know that all of us, regardless who we love, are created in God's image," Stringfellow said in a written statement. "It is our hope that when the Supreme Court rules on the Perry case next year, more of God's children will be able to make a lifelong commitment to the person they love, and to strengthen their families, through marriage."

The Supreme Court decided today to review Prop. 8, the California state ballot initiative that said marriage can only be between a man and a woman. Arguments will be submitted to the court by April and a decision could come as early as June, 2013.
