San Francisco police are looking for the driver of a black sedan who hit a pole in the city's Excelsior neighborhood early this morning and left his passengers behind, one of whom has life-threatening injuries.

According to Officer Gordon Shyy, the accident happened about 2:30 a.m. when the driver smacked into a pole on Mission Street and Geneva Avenue, got out of the car, and fled on foot. The unidentified driver left his passengers -- a 36-year-old woman, a 24-year-old man, and a 22-year-old woman.

Muni was diverted for about 30 minutes while investigators combed the scene for evidence and cleared debris. The case has been assigned to the hit-and-run unit where investigators are now trying to determine who was operating the car when it collided into a pole.

The victims suffered head and leg injuries; two of them are expected to recover, while the 36-year-old woman remains in critical condition this morning.
