SFPD Holds Public Memorial for Officer James Guelff, Who Was Killed by Carjacking Suspect

On Nov. 13, 1994, Guelff was the first officer who responded to a call of a man with a gun in the area of Pine and Franklin streets. As he walked to the suspect's car, Officer Guelff was confronted by the suspect, who opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle.
Officer Guelff fired back at the suspect, who was wearing a ballistic helmet, a flak jacket, and was carrying hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to SFPD. As Guelff was reloading his weapon, the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Victor Boutwell, shot him again, killing him.
The SWAT team was called in and shot and killed the suspect. Officer Guelff served with the San Francisco Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his two children.
The memorial will begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Pine and Franklin streets -- the intersection where Guelff was killed
The public is welcome to attend.
