Oakland Walmart Protest Against Animal Cruelty

Protestors gathered today outside the Oakland Walmart on Edgewater Drive, voicing their opposition to what they say is cruelty to animals.

The group, Mercy for Animals, is calling on Walmart to require its suppliers to phase out the too small crates, citing new footage filmed at Christensen Farms, a Walmart pork supplier.

The pork sold in Walmart stores comes from pigs who are housed in cages too small for them to turn around in, says Phil Letten, national campaign coordinator.

"If Walmart pork producers subjected dogs and cats to the array of standard abuses they inflict on pigs, they would be arrested and jailed on grounds of animal cruelty," says Letten.

Kroger, Safeway, Costco, and McDonald's have all recently phased out the crates, according to Letten.

We tried to get Walmart's view on this but they didn't return our calls by press time.
