Hurricane Sandy: S.F. to Host "A Very Jersey Christmas" to Benefit Storm Survivors
Black Friday is over, the Christmas tree is up in Union Square, and San Franciscans are busy making holiday plans -- sans the snow.
So while you are out shopping for your loved ones, don't forget about the less fortunate, specifically those sad victims of Hurricane Sandy. On Dec. 5, a "Very Jersey Xmas" party is coming to town, where organizers will collect money and things for our fellow friends and family over on the East Coast.
Using social media and the power of crowd sourcing, organizer Pat Reilly, who hails from Bloomfield, N.J., just 12 miles outside Manhattan, joined other San Francisco-based New Jersey expats with the hope of raising $10,000 to benefit hurricane survivors.
"There's one thing New Jersey does really well and that's make people from New Jersey," Reilly says. "Once a Jersey girl, always a Jersey girl."
Partygoers can buy tickets to this shindig, which is being held at Temple Nightclub on Howard Street, by making a contribution of any size. The party will start at 6 p.m. sharp.
You can donate as little as $10 (the Snooki level) or as much as $1,000 (Real Housewives of New Jersey level). A $500 donation means you're officially on the Bruce Springsteen level.
You are encouraged to get in the spirit by dressing in your favorite Jersey costumes, anything from leopard print to a velour track suit -- or come as your favorite Jersey character, perhaps Jon Stewart or Whitney Houston. There are sure to be some drag Snookis at the party, Reilly says.
Yes, Guido Santa will be there along with Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi karaoke. There'll be awards for the biggest hair and the best bling as well as a Real Housewives table-tossing contest.
The superstorm that struck the East Coast late last month caused more than $62 billion in damages and killed more than 100 people; New York and New Jersey took the brunt of the storm's wrath. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says his state alone suffered $29.5 billion in damages.
If you can't make the party, you are still welcome to donate to the cause here.
