Medical authorities have identified the man who killed himself after leading police on a car chase to Treasure Island as 29-year-old Duncan Phillips.

Phillips, a Benecia resident, was reportedly wanted by Benicia police for allegedly stealing his ex-girlfriend's car at gunpoint and robbing and pistol-whipping another woman last Thursday.

San Francisco police spotted Duncan with a stolen white sedan on Bush Street before midnight on Monday. Police trailed him as he blew through red lights, crossing the Bay Bridge and ending the police chase on Treasure Island. At one point he fired a shot outside the car, police said.

He bolted from the car, hunkered down by the shore, and repeatedly threatened suicide as he waved his gun. Police called in for negotiators, who talked to Phillips until he shot himself at 5 a.m.

Treasure Island was closed to residents coming and going through the night.
