A local journalist made headlines after he was attacked while trying to report a story for CBS 5 in Oakland.

The news station says that CBS 5 cameraman Gregg Welk and reporter Anne Makovec were out doing a live report on the passage of Proposition 30 in front of Oakland Technical High School on the 4300 block of Broadway when a group of men attacked the photographer.

The men punched Welk, took his camera, and hopped in a car with the stolen property in tow, according to CBS 5 Communications Director Akilah Bolden-Monifa.

Welk suffered minor injuries and the station says he is recovering from the incident, which is the latest in a string of violence against local journalists.

Earlier this summer, we told readers about the disturbing trend over in the East Bay with reporters being attacked and robbed at gunpoint while on the job. In July, Laura Oda, a veteran photographer for the Oakland Tribune, was out at the San Pablo murals at 35th Street shooting photos for the newspaper when a gun-toting man swiped her two cameras off her shoulder. A second man took her laptop and camera from the back of her car, which was parked on 36th Street.

A month before that, two photographers had two cameras and a tripod stolen while they were setting up to photograph the painters make the mural on San Pablo Avenue. The painters ran after the robbers, but backed off after the suspects pulled out a gun, the newspaper reports.

Anyone with information about these incidents should to call the cops at (510) 238-3326.
