Getting off on Muni
Yet another reason riding Muni is scary.

San Francisco police have arrested a 39-year-old man who allegedly groped a teenage girl as she rode the Muni bus home last week.

Capt. Greg Corrales tells us the incident started about 4:20 p.m., when the 17-year-old got onto the 37 Muni line at 14th and Church streets. She was sitting in the rear of the bus when a man came and sat next to her. As soon as he was settled, he placed his left hand on her leg, just above her knee, and began rubbing her.

He placed his sweatshirt over his hand, presumably to hide what was happening. The girl scooted over, but the man continued to rub her leg for 30 minutes  police said. When the bus neared her stop, she pressed the "stop" indicator on the bus. Afterward, then man started rubbing with more pressure, and then slipped his hand in her thigh area, Corrales said. He did not touch her genitals.

When the bus stopped the girl got up and ran toward her house, screaming; she looked back and saw the suspect make eye contact with her. Her father heard her screams and came outside. The two jumped into the car and followed the Muni bus until the suspect exited at Burnett and Glenview, according to police.

When the girl pointed out the suspect, her dad stopped the car, hopped out and grabbed the man by his shirt. The suspect said "What are you doing, I did not do anything, I do not even know her."

Police said the father took this as a sign of admission and punched the suspect, who fell to the ground. While dad called the cops, the suspect ran off, hiding out behind some apartments nearby. Police arrived, located the suspect, and arrested him on suspicion of battery.

Life isn't so simple when you are 17. She felt violated, but probably too embarrassed to make a scene on the bus :/

Strange, yes. But maybe blaming the 17-year-old girl is not the best course of action. If he were truly innocent he would not have run when the police were called.

Good for him! I live in a neighborhood where I am highly visible so I need to be aware of what's going around me day and night.

I find myself watching my surroundings more these days. I also watch others and if I don't find they are paying attention to their surroundings I say something. I did that tody to be honest.
