Oakland received a chilling missive over the weekend from a group of folks who are calling on the city's residents to bring bats and beat the shit out of anarchists and vandals during next week's Occupy protest.
The flyer, which was disseminated throughout downtown, urges residents to defend the city and calls on them to get violent, especially on the black-clad caucasians who use the city "as a canvas for their divisive and violent message."
From what we understand, nobody is taking responsibility for one-page post, which provides no contact information or anything of substance regarding authorship. But whoever did leave the flyer claims to be from a group calling itself Defend Our Oakland Movement (aka DOOM), according to news reports.
Needless to say, city officials aren't thrilled by the latest downtown promotion; according to the
Oakland Tribune,
Councilman Ignacio De La
Fuente, who hasn't been a huge fan of Occupy protesters from the get-go, bluntly said whoever wrote up this flyer is "obviously an extremist and crazy."
Next Thursday marks the first anniversary of the
Occupy Oakland eviction, where police in riot gear stormed the group's campsite in downtown, breaking down tents and evicting protesters.
The early-morning raid quickly devolved into protests, chaos, and violence, putting Oakland -- once again -- in a negative light. This incident led to periodic protests throughout the year, which included anarchists who would vandalize businesses throughout downtown.
Oakland police say they're prepared for any nonsense to come next week. Or you could just ignore those shady flyers, because, let's face it, the last thing Oakland needs is more violence.
