This week's feature story, "Hiding in Plain Sight," explores how Wilfredo "Flaco" Reyes, the second suspect in the June 2008 murder of Anthony Bologna and two of his sons, was able to evade the San Francisco Police Department for four years.

Reyes fled town soon after the crime. While Edwin Ramos stood trial (he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole), substantial evidence suggested that Reyes was in Greenville, S.C., where his mother's family had made base after leaving Guatemala years ago.

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence was a series of photographs taken by Officer Bryan Teal of the Duncan, S.C. Police Department. Reyes' South Carolina roommate, Elgado Medrano, a Bay Area MS-13 gang member also wanted by the SFPD, was arrested for a car theft in August 2009. Teal, while investigating that crime, interviewed Reyes and took several photos of him.

Here are those photos:

Although two SFPD officers eventually flew to South Carolina to extradite Medrano a month later, they did not learn of the images of Reyes, as they failed to follow-up on leads that would have revealed Reyes' hideout. The Reyes photos -- definitive proof of his whereabouts more than a year after the murders -- wouldn't arrive in San Francisco for another two and a half years.

As the story explained:

At the Ramos trial, Teal testified that he mailed the San Francisco DA's office a package containing the documents related to the Medrano case, including the footage and photographs of Reyes. Assistant DA Harry Dorfman, who handled the murder case, stated under oath that he never received that package. To this day, what happened to it remains a mystery.

The photos were introduced into the Ramos trial only after the defense team's private investigator, Tim O'Brien, contacted Spartanburg, S.C., County Prosecutor David Cude in January 2012. Offhand, Cude referenced the existence of the photos, which he assumed the S.F. DA's office had already received.

Reyes was arrested in July, a month after Ramos was sentenced. He is currently facing first-degree murder charges.
