Marijuana Is Bad For Your Cojones, Researchers Say
As our sister paper LA Weekly notes this morning SoCal researchers say that dudes who indulge in marijuana might be getting high at the expense of their nuts. The study claims that men who have a long track record of smoking weed are twice as likely to develop "subtypes of testicular cancer called non-seminoma and mixed germ cell tumors."
Victoria Cortessis, USC assistant professor of preventative medicine, compared 163 young men with testicular cancer to 292 healthy men, and concluded that those diagnosed with cancer were more likely to have smoked pot at some point in their lives. Both groups had been interviewed about their health and drug use between 1987 and 1994.
"I myself feel like we need to take this seriously now," she told reporters, noting that the rates of testicular cancer have been on the rise for unknown reasons.
Per the study:
We do not know what marijuana triggers in the testis that may lead to carcinogenesis, although we speculate that it may be acting through the endocannabinoid system -- the cellular network that responds to the active ingredient in marijuana -- since this system has been shown to be important in the formation of sperm. There is a silver lining for all you substance-abusers out there: Marijuana might not be great for your nuts, but you could still shove all the cocaine up your nose you want and not worry about getting cancer down there, researchers concluded.
Of course, being a cokehead poses its own set of obvious problems, none of which this study mentioned.
