CHP Officer Shot in East Bay, Freeway Closed (Updated)

(Update 9:55 a.m.): Officer Elon Steers tells us the CHP officer who was shot has been taken to John Muir Hospital and is in critical condition. The suspect is also in serious condition. The freeway is still closed. Check back later for updates.
(Original story 8:58 a.m.): A California Highway Patrol officer has been shot on Highway 680 during morning rush hour.
According to press reports, the cop was shot after he exchanged fire with a suspect on the highway in Alamo. The suspect was wounded, but no word on the officer's condition.
The clogged freeway has been closed down and the southbound lanes of Highway 680 were being forced to exit at Livorna Road.
