BART Turns 40 This Month -- And Looks Every Year of It

BART was lovlier then .. in every way

In this era, when modern humans can nip and tuck anything to make themselves look like ageless gods, it's hard to believe that anyone approaching 40 would choose to look so damn haggard.

In case it slipped your mind, BART is having a birthday this month -- its 40th. If you find this news hard to believe, look no further than the four decades of carpet on your train. In any event, the employees were hoping all you loyal passengers would make 40 a special ride for BART.

BART fired off an e-mail today to its passengers asking for any and all old BART memorabilia (like photos of BART at its first birthday party with frosting on its face)?

Could really use a nip and a tuck

Perhaps, for reasons nobody can explain, you held onto your circa 1980 BART ticket, or you have photos of protesters holding up trains back in the day -- that'd make a great showing at this birthday bash.

"We'll display some of the visuals on a Pinterest pinboard and will use materials in other ways to tell our story," BART staff said.

So if you come across any relics or old photos that you'd like to share, please post them to Flickr, using the Creative Commons license (so the transit agency can give you proper attribution). Tag your shots with "BART40th." If you are really into party planning, you can also e-mail ideas and suggestions to bart40th@bart.gov.

Otherwise, come give the birthday train that big spanking it so deserves.
