Dumb Teen Unwittingly Attempts to Rob S.F. Cop, Gets Shot

The teen, an Alameda resident whose name was not released because he's a minor, was still in the hospital as of last night, but remains in stable condition, Oakland Police Department spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson told reporters.
Fortunately, neither the deputy nor the woman he was with at the time were injured. The victim's names are not being released.
Here's what happened: The deputy said he was walking with his lady friend near Lake Merritt on the 400 block of Lee Street around 1:30 a.m. when the teen approached the couple, pulled out a gun, and demanded money. Instead of taking out his wallet, the sheriff reportedly pulled out his own gun and shot the boy.
The cop, in his professional estimation, "perceived a threat to his life," Watson said. The boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. The cop was not taken into custody for shooting the teen.
The deputy has been with the department for two decades and
is deemed a good cop with a clean record. The Sheriff's Department is following standard department protocol in handling this incident.
Until Oakland police complete their investigation of this case, the deputy will have a "no public or inmate contact status," Susan Fahey, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department, told SF Weekly. After the investigation is finished, the "department would convene a weapons discharge review board."
No word on whether the deputy used his on-duty gun or a personal pistol. What we do know is that investigators suspect this is the same teen linked to two other robberies nearby earlier Sunday evening.
