"There were lots of furnishings, lots of papers -- going up the stairs, there was stuff piled on each side of you," Gonzales said. "It could have been bad for us; we could have gotten trapped."
Both elderly men, who were only described as in their 70s, were inside the house when the fire broke out; one died in the bedroom where the fire started and the other victim, who was in an adjacent room at the time of the fire, died from smoke inhalation, Gonzales said.
Original story (7:32 a.m.): Two elderly men died this morning in fire that broke out in the city's Excelsior neighborhood.
Fire officials say the blaze started at 3:34 a.m. at 181 Vienna St., near John McLaren Park. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly an hour before extinguishing the flames.
That's all we know for now, but check back for updates.
