The only thing alarming at Shell today are the gas prices
Update (8:23 a.m.): Apparently, refinery officials were testing the alarm system when they accidentally issued a real warning. Well, at least we know it works.

Original story (8:10 a.m.): Nobody is quite clear why, but Contra Costa County health officials sounded a false alarm early this morning, warning residents of an emergency at the Shell refinery in Martinez.

Turns out, there was no emergency, according to Randy Sawyer, chief environmental and hazardous materials officer for Contra Costa County Health Services.

But residents, already shaken by the Monday night fire at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, didn't know what to make of the call they received shortly before 7:30 this morning, alerting them to stay inside and close all doors and windows, CBS News reports.

Residents also reported hearing sirens near the refinery. But don't worry, everything is okay. You can go back to sleep now.
