Update (4:20 p.m.) Officer Albie Esparza just got back from the scene and tells us that both males who were shot have died. They were only described as being in their early 20s. Investigators are out there combing the area for evidence. Police say a lot of people witnessed the shooting, and are asking them to come forward anonymously.

(Original story): Two men are clinging to life after being shot in broad daylight when a large fight broke out near the city's Sunnydale housing projects this afternoon.

Officer Albie Esparza tells us that officers were called out to the unit block of Burr Avenue about 1:12 p.m. on reports of a shooting. When the cops arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Esparza said there was a "large, hostile crowd," at the scene, so officers called for backup from neighboring police stations. No word on how many cops were at the scene, but neighbors described it to the SF Appeal as "commotion."

The suspects were only described as two black men wearing black hoodies. They were last seen running from Burr Avenue toward Argonaut Avenue, Esparza said.

It's the second instance of daytime violence in the recent weeks. Just last Monday, July 23, a masked gunman reportedly opened fire in the city's Mission District just after 2 p.m. The shooter fired about 10 rounds while standing at the corner of 24th and Alabama streets. Fortunately, nobody was hit.
