Commuting Chaos Continues: Now Muni Is Stalled

(Update 4:45 p.m.): Muni says crews have fixed the overhead wires in the tunnel west of the Castro Station, but have been unable to restore power to the lines. Crews remain on the scene. Your commute home will not be pleasant if you are relying on the K, L, or M lines. Read the transit plan after the jump.

 

(Original story 1:18 p.m.): Just as the Bay Bridge reopened this morning, Muni broke down.

Kristen Holland, spokeswoman for Muni, tells us that just before 11 a.m. an overhead wire problem near the Castro station caused the inbound train to stall, thus creating more commuting hell. The mechanical issue created a domino effect of delays between Van Ness and West Portal stations for both inbound and outbound trains, Holland tells us.

Specifically, if you are relying on the K, M, and L lines, your screwed for now. Anyone on the J Church or N Judah are in luck -- those trains are still entering the subway.

Muni has called on buses to shuttles passengers between the West Portal and Embarcadero stations while crews work to repair the problem. Subway service is still operating between Van Ness and Embarcadero, Holland says.

(Update 4:45 p.m.): Below are the following updates and changes to Muni lines K, L, and M:

• K-Ingleside: Regular outbound (westbound) service to Balboa Park is in place; Inbound (eastbound) service is available to either West Portal where customers will need to transfer to a bus shuttle, or to Balboa Park where trains will continue on the J-Church line to downtown stations.

• M-Ocean View line: Regular outbound service to Balboa Park is in place; inbound service will travel on the J line to downtown stations.

• L-Taraval: For outbound (westbound) service in the subway, take any M or K line train to West Portal and transfer to an L line train. Inbound (eastbound) service from the Zoo; either transfer to a bus shuttle at West Portal or continue over the M line to Balboa Park for service on the J line to downtown stations.
  

Outbound (westbound) service is operating in the subway, including between Van Ness and West Portal stations. No K, L, or M trains are operating inbound (eastbound) from West Portal to Van Ness stations.
