Update: Police released a photo of the persons of interest in the murder of Stephen Martin.  Above is a picture showing a man in a 49ers jersey and a female in an orange tutu. Police are asking for the public's help in identifying them. Martin is pictured on the far right-hand side wearing a green troll doll wig.

(Original story: June 11, 2012): The man who was clinging to life after being sucker-punched in Golden Gate Park after the Bay to Breakers race has died.

Medical authorities confirmed that 30-year-old Stephen Martin of Santa Clara died Friday after his family took him off life support. He had been in the hospital with "unrecoverable brain damage" since the May 20 incident.

According to press reports, Martin's family released the following statement:
As per the doctor's recommendation we took him off life support Friday morning -- and allowed nature to take its course. Thank you all for your prayers and support.

Police said Martin, who had been wearing a green troll doll wig, was sitting near Sharon Park Studio about 5 p.m. after the race when he began arguing with a group of men in 49ers jerseys.

As they were fighting, one man jumped in and hit Martin in the head, knocking him to the ground, police said. Martin was unconscious when paramedics arrived, and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a life-threatening head injury.

The suspects, who were only described as Hispanic men in their 20s, ran off and have not been found. However, police say there were plenty of witnesses who saw the argument unfold, and are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the cops at 575-4444, or Text-a-Tip to TIP411.

Just FYI, it's pretty irresponsible to call it the "Murder" of Stephen Martin as "Murder" implies "malice aforethought" meaning, the perpetrator had to intend to kill to it murder is to call the accused a murderer, something I think best left to the courts.

Does KRON 4 still broadcast the event? It's a longshot, but there may be file footage there.

What is it about sports fans? There are so many angry people out there.  Do we know what they were arguing about?  This is so tragic.
